Radio Veronica - Radio Northsea International
In many ways the story of Radio North Sea International (RNI) and Radio Veronica is even more incredible than the Radio Caroline story..... more info on these photographs will be added soon but most of these slides were taken with a small 110 format camera and the ones at sea were taken as Radio Veronica and RNI closed down at the end of august 1974 due to the Dutch governments law banning the pirate radio stations. A few days after the law came into effect I was on board the RNI ship the Mebo 2 as she travelled through the Rotterdam canals to be refitted at Slikkerveer in preparation for sailing to broadcast off the coast of Italy as Radio Nova. I had left Radio Caroline a few days before the Dutch law came into effect and was going to work for the station in Italy but this never happened. The ship was impounded and remained in dock for several years before being bought by colonial Gadaffi and sailed to Libya where after a few years the transmitters were removed and the ship was used as target practice for the Libyan airforce and blown up! RNI also played a part in winning the UK 1970 election for the British conservative party....... more on this soon......
